My favourite podcasts

I’d like to compile a list of interesting audio and video podcasts. I have split this list into three main sections so you can easily find the topic that interests you. Let’s start with the list:

Projectmanagement related podcasts

The Project Management Podcast (Audio + few videos)

http://www.thepmpodcast.com/ The pm podcast is produced by Cornelius Fichtner. He is a project manager (in the US) for quite some time now and started with this podcast in 2005. There are currently (01/2009) ~115 episodes which you can download via rss/itunes. The episodes are very interesting and the audio quality is really good (maybe except some telephone interviews).  The show consists of news, tips, nuggets of wisdom ad the main “block”. The main part is either cornelius talking about a certain topic or cornelius doing an interview with other interesting people from the pm community. If you are interested in projectmanagement this podcast is definetively worth a try!

PM-Podcast (Audio)

http://podcast.mikrotechnik.net/?feed=podcast German Audio-Podcast that deals with project management. Audio quality is ok. It deals mainly with the pmbok (project management body of knowledge). The podcast is currently not very active (last shows are each ~2 months apart). Nevertheless a nice show. When you understand german then you can give it a try.

Development related podcasts

In my initial blog post where I presented development podcasts, the list was a lot longer, but due to inactivity of certain podcasts I have reduced the list a lot.

YouTube :: Videos by googletechtalks (Video)

http://www.youtube.com/rss/user/googletechtalks/videos.rss The google techtalk channel offers really nice talks that deal with software development and some “normal” technology topics. There are for example talks about eclipse features where one of the developers talks about his project. This is my personal no. 1 channel. (~45-60 min)

SE-Radio.net (Audio)

http://feeds.feedburner.com/se-radio Software engineering (audio) podcasts. Audio quality seems to be much better than the parleys quality. Also the most guys come from germany, so I can understand their accent much better than the parleys guys accent, which seem to be located in belgium. The casts consist of interviews with certain qualified people about SOA, Agile development, patterns etc. The casts are really interesting. Definitively worth a try!

Parleys.com (Audio, via website also video)

http://parleys.libsyn.com/rss Parleys is the audio version of the devoxx talks (if I understood that correctly) that are released in bursts over the year. It consists of many audio casts. They also have many video casts but they are only available via their website, because the use a system that has 2 video streams for talks, one for the speaker and one for the projector. This simply doesn’t work very well with plain podcast rss feeds.  Episodes take ~ 5-20 min.

IT Conversations (Audio)

http://feeds.conversationsnetwork.org/channel/itc The guys from IT Conversations are producing several audio podcasts. Some are interviews and some are called StackOverFlow where they talk about the website-project and they answer questions from users regarding software development. (~15-50 min.)

OnSoftware (Video + Audio)

http://www.informit.com/podcasts/index_rss.aspx?c=7 OnSoftware is one channel of InformIT. The casts are audio and video and deal with topics from Refactoring to trends in software development. I like the interviews with important persons in the software industry, for example Joshua Bloch that give you a pretty good insight why certain things are done in this way and not in another way in Java. Although the most episodes are rather short and only take ~5-30 min.

Not development related podcasts

All casts below are video podcasts

GeekBrief.TV

http://www.podshow.com/feeds/gbtv.xml Calli Lewis presents daily tech news and other interesting bits of information. (~5 minutes)

“Loaded” from CNET TV

The Digg Reel (HD Quicktime)

http://revision3.com/diggreel/feed/quicktime-high-definition Digg Reel is a summary of high rated videos on digg.com. It’s pretty funny and it saves a lot of time, searching for funny videos. You just get them all at once. (takes ~10-15 minutes)

Diggnation (Large Quicktime)

http://revision3.com/diggnation/feed/quicktime-large/ Diggnation is a great weekly show where Alex Albrecht and Kevin Rose talk about stories that got high ratings on Digg.com while drinking beer. Very funny show. A must-see. (~1hour)

The Totally Rad Show (Large Quicktime)

http://revision3.com/trs/feed/quicktime-large/ Another weekly show of Alex Albrecht. He and his buddies Jeff Canata and Dan Trachtenberg talk about movies, TV shows, video games and comic books. Plus they have a small intro in each episode where the three show that they can be very funny actors ;-) (~1 hour)

YouTube :: Videos by AtGoogleTalks

http://www.youtube.com/rss/user/AtGoogleTalks/videos.rss Google Talks is a great channel with many different videos from talks at the google hq’s. Normally there are authors that talk about their books but also scientists or other important people are there to give nice talks. Topics go from Novel XYZ to global warming and how it may be stopped. Definitively worth a try! (~1 hour)

X-Play’s Daily Video Podcast

http://www.g4tv.com/xplay/podcasts/6/XPlay_Daily_Video_Podcast.xml Small casts about computer games. Sometimes reviews/previews of games or other games related topics. (~5 mins)

Quarks & Co

http://podcast.wdr.de/quarks.xml German science show with Ranga Yogeshwar. (~1hour)

ScienCentral News: Making Sense of Science

http://www.sciencentral.com/podcasts.rss Science related news (~3-5 minutes)

Experiment of the Week

http://krampf.blip.tv/rss Robert Krampf presents nice experiments to explore science. The experiments are pretty simple and they explain mostly stuff you should have learned at school, but he has a nice way of explaining and showing things. (~5 min.

End ;)

That’s it. If you know podcasts that may be interesting, please leave a comment or send me an email to cornelis@pcornelissen.de.
