Rooting of the Samsung Galaxy – use sudo on ubuntu…

[update]

I succeeded to install the new recovery image.

fastboot only recognozes the phone when the phone is in fastboot and you have to (or i had to) be root!

[old Text]

I am trying to root my samsung galaxy.
I tried to follow http://www.nodch.de/howto-root-samsung-galaxy-mit-ubuntu/1138 (german blog).

I have tried this on Ubunu 9.10 32Bit and 64 Bit (on different machines)

Here is what I did:

  1. Install Android SDK
  2. replace ADP with http://floe.butterbrot.org/external/adb.gz
  3. Downloaded http://android-dls.com/files/linux/fastboot

“fastboot devices” just returns without any output

“adb devices” returns the correct device

I am running out of clues expecially because I get no output at all for “fastboot devices”…

When I start “fastboot getvar version” and put the device  with holding the two lower buttons in fastboot mode, nothing happens but fastboot puts out the “<waiting for device>” and nothing happens until I kill the process.

Does anyone have a clue what my be wrong here?

  1. Is USB debugging activated on your device?

  2. Yes, I forgot that at first but I had to turn it on anyway to get “adb devices” to find my galaxy
